Studio Notes #83: Building the Machine.

Every part has a purpose.

There's a point in building a business when you realize that doing the work and building the business are two entirely different things.

Early on, nearly everything depends on you. Every conversation, every decision, every opportunity. You're responsible for creating momentum and keeping it moving.

That works until it doesn't.

Eventually, you have to start thinking about how the work gets done without being personally responsible for every part of it.

That's where the real challenge begins.

You have to define the process, establish expectations and communicate what success looks like. You have to give other people enough direction to represent what you're building while leaving them enough room to do their jobs.

And you have to accept that the first version probably won't be perfect.

We've been working through some of that lately. Taking things that have largely existed as conversations and individual efforts and turning them into repeatable processes.

It's less exciting than launching something new. There are scripts to refine, systems to establish and plenty of details that aren't particularly interesting on their own.

But they're necessary.

Because the goal isn't to get better at doing everything yourself.

It's to build something that doesn't require you to.
