Studio Note #57: I Kind of Don’t Care.

I’m probably supposed to be in that chair. 🫠

Colorado Startup Week is happening this week.

I should probably be excited about it.

I’m building a company in Texas and Colorado. We’re launching new things, meeting people, looking for opportunities, trying to grow and figuring a lot of it out as we go.

I am, almost comically, the exact person Startup Week is for.

And I kind of don’t care.

That sounds harsher than I mean it.

I don’t have anything against Startup Week. I’m sure there are great speakers, smart people in the rooms and conversations worth having. There’s probably something happening this week that I would genuinely benefit from attending.

I just can’t seem to get excited about the idea of talking about building businesses right now.

Because I’m busy building one.

There was a time when spending a week surrounded by founders, ideas, panels and conversations about growth would have been exactly what I needed.

Right now, I have plenty of ideas.

What I need is to make the ones we already have work.

I need to turn conversations into clients. I need to follow up with people. I need to dedicate more time to establishing a consistent presence on social. I need to keep building the things we’ve already decided are worth building. I need to figure out what’s working, what isn’t and what needs to change.

None of that sounds particularly exciting on a conference schedule.

But that’s the work.

And maybe that’s really what I’m reacting to.

There’s an entire culture built around entrepreneurship. The events. The panels. The podcasts. The founder stories. The conversations about disruption, innovation, scaling and whatever word we’ve all agreed to beat to death this year.

Then there’s actually running a business.

The two obviously overlap.

But they aren’t the same thing.

Sometimes you need to get out of your own bubble. Meet people. Hear new ideas. Get inspired by somebody doing something completely different from you.

And sometimes the last thing you need is another idea.

You need to execute the ones you already have.

I think that’s where I am.

Maybe I’ll wander into something at Startup Week and meet someone who completely changes my mind.

Maybe I’ll discover I’ve been an idiot for not paying more attention to it.

That would actually be pretty great.

But for now, I’ve got work to do.
