Studio Note #20: If You Always Have to Explain it…

Clarity beats curiosity.

This is one of the biggest reasons we created VNDR Studios.

Our parent company, Vendorfied, began as a web-based, value-driven vendor management platform. We launched it, put it in front of beta users, demonstrated it to investors and gathered as much feedback as we could.

The verdict was clear: the concept had potential, but the product needed another iteration before it was ready.

While we went back to the drawing board, my business partner and I made a decision. Rather than wait on the platform, we would lean into something I already knew how to do: build brands.

So we started offering branding services.

The work was rewarding. The clients were happy. But there was one problem.

We found ourselves explaining it over and over.

"Well, we also do branding..."

"Actually, one of our biggest strengths is..."

"I've been building brands for years..."

None of those conversations were wrong.

But they shouldn't have been necessary.

It forced us to confront an uncomfortable truth.

If people have to ask what you do before they can appreciate what you do, your brand is making them work too hard.

That's not a marketing problem.

It's a branding problem.

The strongest brands answer questions before they're ever asked. They communicate who they are, what they do and what someone should expect long before a conversation begins.

That doesn't mean every business needs a new name.

But every business should ask the same question:

What assumptions does our brand create before we ever speak?

Because whether you realize it or not, your customers are already making them.

VNDR Studios wasn't created because we wanted another company.

It was created because we wanted our brand to say, at a glance, what we'd spent the last 18 months saying in meetings and networking events.

Sometimes the clearest message isn't another explanation.

Sometimes it's building a brand that no longer needs one.
